[ # ] Great News for Cork - Amazon 450 jobs
March 2nd, 2006 under Industry Development, News

it’s been stirring for the past months on whether it was happening or not. Now it’s official…Amazon are establishing their European Service Centre in Cork.

see RTE’s article

This further copper fastens Ireland’s strength in securing the new economy multinationals.

Also with the recent announcement of Cork company DSI’s partnership with Amazon, Ireland is really showing it’s world class capabilities in the new economy in attracting such commitments.

Congratulations to the IDA, Minister Michael Martin and his team..

Too bad it’s just call-center jobs.

but 450 Customer Service personnel require many local IT supports, products and services from the region. The BIG STAMP OF APPROVAL for Cork and Ireland is great

Even though the bulk of jobs aren’t IT (but at least they’re jobs for somebody), it’s good publicity for Cork. Did the link-up with DSI have anything to do with Amazon choosing Cork? It might provide more opportunities for other Cork firms to hook up with Amazon.

two separate successes with different sides of Amazon.

from what I’ve seen, there are no hard links between the two decisions but who knows what influence the DSI announcement had on nudging the final decision.

Amazon setting up a (temporary) base in Cork?

I note it was reported yesterday that Amazon are opening a multi-lingual callcentre in Cork, with the support of IDA Ireland. Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Miche?ɬ°l Martin helps himself to some of the credit, naturally.

Anyone want to bet on the Amazon call centre jobs remaining in Cork beyond 2011? In a typical IDA scheme, that time frame would be just enough time to cut loose without paying back any Exchequer grants.

“want to bet?”

is it only a successful win, if they stay beyond 2011?

the incentives to attract foreign investment are a gamble indeed.

Amazon moving into Cork is a success.
